Zagami, 1.58 Grams |
On October 3rd, 1962 in Katsina Province, Nigeria
, a farmer was chasing cows from his corn field. The farmer heard what
sounded like an explosion and felt a pressure wave when suddenly a rock landed
about 10 feet away, burying itself in the soil about 2 feet. Little
did the farmer, or anyone else at that time realize, but what would later
be called the Zagami meteorite was actually an 18,000 gram rock from the
planet Mars! I am sometimes asked, "Well if this rock is from the planet Mars, why isn't is red?" The reason why is because Mars itself isn't actually red. The surface of the planet is coated in a fine oxidized dust - red dust - which gives it's redish hue in visual and telescopic views. |
